Ruby-colored lotus blossoms, stones like frozen clouds, slim bamboos, pools where silvery fish dart: an expansive garden lures seekers of pleasure from a grand house to share goblets of wine by the shade of a palm, to listen to a ballad plucked from a pipa, or to dally with a loved one beside a manmade lake. These twelve serene paintings, the work of an unknown artist from the reign of the Qianlong emperor (1736–1795), convey the leisure world of Beijing’s wealthiest men and women at the height of the Qing dynasty.
