Malcah Zeldis draws on childhood memories, her life in various Orthodox neighborhoods, and time spent in Israel to create paintings that capture the living spirit of Jewish tradition. The observances that connect the members of today’s community to one another and to the distant past find loving expression in Zeldis’s vibrant art. From everyday rituals to annual ceremonies to once-in-a-lifetime events, the scenes depicted in this calendar’s thirteen paintings capture the fine threads connecting the spiritual and the domestic. The first twelve months of this sixteen-month calendar each feature a colorful reproduction accompanied by explanatory text. The last four months are grouped on one page, also accompanied by a painting and a commentary. The calendar includes Jewish holidays, days of the Jewish year, weekly Torah readings, and candlelighting times for selected cities.
