Characterized by delicate, elaborate ornamentation and sinuous, sensual lines, the international design movement known as Art Nouveau emerged in Europe and the United States in the 1890s. Nowhere is Art Nouveau better represented than in the era’s posters: late nineteenth-century printing innovations made the poster a fresh, exciting medium and a prime advertising tool. Artists suddenly reached a wider audience with works that announced events; lured passersby to cafés, galleries, and spas; and helped sell a diverse array of products and services. Today these posters are prized collector’s items. The twelve superb posters reproduced here were designed by some of Art Nouveau’s foremost practitioners.
